Here are some miscelleaneous photos from around the building. 

This hole is located in the front hallway close to the parking lot.  As I was photographing one day, I noticed that there were workers coming in and out of this opening.  It was much like the way busy bees would go in and out of a hive.  So I went over to take a picture of the work they were doing and this is what I saw...............

Not here either.  Actually, they were working in an area that I couldn't see from the opening.  There is much work to be done even if you can't see it. 

I realized that I never posted a picture of the new hallway that leads to the cafeteria.  For the village teachers this was one of the most exciting things that was finished.  It cuts down on our travel time into the building. 

I just thought this was a neat picture.  The electricians were stacking outlet inserts to prep for the building of the concrete block walls in the new classrooms. 

Eco Friendly

Concrete trucks will be coming and going at CME as the building progresses.  As part of an effort to be eco-friendly, Lexington has an ordinance that when the concrete trucks wash out their chute they have to put it into this wash out 'area' instead of putting it on the ground.  When the concrete dries, it is then removed and disposed of with other debris. 

Working in the Heat

The temperatures this week have kept many people indoors, but not our faithful construction workers.  Despite a heat index of 110, they are working hard.  Some have adjusted their schedules in order to avoid as much of the intense sun as possible.  The good news is that some of the work they are doing is actually creating instead of demolishing. 

A trench has been dug for water pipes to be laid.  This area will end up being a hallway that will come from the back of the building and run beside the cafeteria where the stage is currently located. 



I refer to this as the baby backhoe.  It has been used to get into the tight spaces in the kitchen area.  The worker is now using it to move gravel to fill the open trenches. 



(Sorry for the quality of the photo.)  This is the first new brick being laid in the kitchen area.  This was originally the dirty tray return window.  The door frame on the right is new.

Work Continues, Part 2

Sharing a few more photos.....

The soffett in the lobby had to be removed.   The debris was shoveled into wheelbarrows and carried out. 

This is the view of the soffett.  The blue wiring is from the server and leads to the rooms on the right side of the lobby. 

This is a view of the primary hallway.  A much shorter view. 

A new fire hydrant was installed.  Notice that it is in the middle of our current parking lot.  When the building is finished there will be a new configuration for our car pick up lane.  Perhaps the fire hydrant will be sitting on a grassy median?????? 

Workers have begun to demolish the roof over the primary hallway. 

I've include pictures of this particular classroom through various stages.  The room has lost its windows, ceiling tiles, and now the cabinetry. 

Wednesday Update

I was hoping to be able to post pictures of the demolition of the end of the building but it has been delayed until tomorrow.  In the mean time, here are a couple more shots of things around the building. 


Conduit and lighting fixtures are more items that are being removed from the building and reused. 



Workers have to clean up the broken glass and window frames that were knocked out of the classrooms.  The worker on the ground is a former Clays Mill student. 



The portables that are currently on the property are going to be dismantled by the district.  Removing the decking is the first step.

The small portable that is located on the front of the property closest to Mary Queen is the general contractor's office (D.W. Wilburn). 



Pages and pages of plans are being used during the renovation. 

The site superintendent (in hard hat), finishes installing the temporary door that is located by the computer lab. 

Rocks are being added to the drainage ditch on the far side of the parking lot.

The following pictures are random things throughout the building. 




In an effort to be a good steward of our funds, the district is reusing various things from our building in other buildings.  An example is the removal of the door knobs and window inserts.  Other schools or buildings can make good use of these parts. 

 


This is a view of the primary hallway looking toward Mary Queen School. 

 


The trailer that is sitting out front now has steps to gain access. 

 




This is a view of the ceiling after a tile has been removed.  The large square is what remains of a skylight.  There were skylights in each room but were covered up in the 1983 renovation. 

  



This is a view of the underside of the building.  The portion that you can see is actually under the hallway and computer lab/library area. 

 




This is an empty classroom ready for renovation.  Notice that some of the ceiling tiles have been removed.  All of the tiles that had paintings from our former 5th grade students and art clubs were saved for a future project.
